October 24, 2007

Meet Professor Johanna Movassat. A charismatic professor in the Art department, Professor Movassat has been the MSA adviser for over 16 YEARS. We really appreciate her amazing fortitude, her outgoing nature, and her ability to articulate the needs of the MSA students to the broader SJSU community.

Johanna D. Movassat graduated with a BA in Art History from Loyola Marymount University, and spent a semester after graduation traveling in Europe and studying German at the Goethe Institute in Berlin.  She then married and moved to Iran for five years and taught English and photographed archaeological, historical and Islamic sites.  After returning to the US she received a MA and a PhD in Near Eastern Studies: Art and Archaeology from the  University of California, Berkeley.  Since then she has spoken and written on various aspects of Near Eastern and Islamic art.  In 2005, her book on The Large Vault at Taq-i Bustan: A Study in Late Sasanian Royal Art, was published by Mellen Press, 2005.

Dr. Movassat has taught various courses on art history at City College of San Francisco and Santa Clara University.  She has been at San Jose State University for sixteen years in the School of Art and Design teaching art history, writing in the arts, arts in a global context, Egyptian/Mesopotamian art, East Meets West in Art, and Islamic Art, and the faculty advisor for the MSA on campus.  For the past two years she has also been the Coordinator for the Creative Arts Program in the Humanities Department in addition to her duties as a lecturer in art history.
