In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful:

Asalaamu ‘Alaikum

The father of Sister Karimah, Sister Mariam, Brother Ziad, and Brother Omar El Helew passed away tonight.  Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un.  Please pray that Allah forgives his sins and blesses him with the highest level of Paradise.  He suffered a great deal from his cancer, may Allah replace that suffering with ease in the hereafter.  Please remember Karimah and her family in your prayers, may Allah grant them strength and patience.  Continue to keep them in your prayers, it is what they need most.

The funeral prayer for Karimah’s father will be held at the MCA today at 1:30pm.  The address is 3003 Scott Blvd Santa Clara CA 95054.

Meet Professor Movassat- MSA Adviser

October 24, 2007

Meet Professor Johanna Movassat. A charismatic professor in the Art department, Professor Movassat has been the MSA adviser for over 16 YEARS. We really appreciate her amazing fortitude, her outgoing nature, and her ability to articulate the needs of the MSA students to the broader SJSU community.

Johanna D. Movassat graduated with a BA in Art History from Loyola Marymount University, and spent a semester after graduation traveling in Europe and studying German at the Goethe Institute in Berlin.  She then married and moved to Iran for five years and taught English and photographed archaeological, historical and Islamic sites.  After returning to the US she received a MA and a PhD in Near Eastern Studies: Art and Archaeology from the  University of California, Berkeley.  Since then she has spoken and written on various aspects of Near Eastern and Islamic art.  In 2005, her book on The Large Vault at Taq-i Bustan: A Study in Late Sasanian Royal Art, was published by Mellen Press, 2005.

Dr. Movassat has taught various courses on art history at City College of San Francisco and Santa Clara University.  She has been at San Jose State University for sixteen years in the School of Art and Design teaching art history, writing in the arts, arts in a global context, Egyptian/Mesopotamian art, East Meets West in Art, and Islamic Art, and the faculty advisor for the MSA on campus.  For the past two years she has also been the Coordinator for the Creative Arts Program in the Humanities Department in addition to her duties as a lecturer in art history.

Below is her contact information. We urge you to use her as a resource, as she has been of enormous value to the MSA.

Working on it!

October 24, 2007

Check out the site! Don’t forget, we just started it, so we know a lot needs to be improved and added…

so tell us what we should add, what you want to see on here, what you want to contribute (want to write an article?)… we’re waiting for your valued input.

Free Qur’ans!

October 22, 2007

Interested in reading the Qur’an in English or Spanish? We give them out for free!

Just email us at sjsumsa@gmail.com and, God willing, we’ll arrange for your free copy.

Islam 101

October 22, 2007

InshaAllah (God willing), shortly we will add info for our visitors who are not Muslim, but are interested in learning more about Islam.

“I think…”

October 22, 2007

We want to know what you think. What events should we hold? Who should we invite to speak? What should we change? Where do we need improvement? How can this website grow?

We are all in this together! The board members are only facilitators. Everyone needs to be involved, and to help give serious advice and help so that, insha’Allah, we will succeed and continue to improve.

Please don’t hesitate to give us constructive criticism, and help us reach the ideal MSA vision that you have in your mind!

Just post away… God willing, you will find us- and everyone else!- ready to read and listen.
